Who Is Jesus? A Simple Guide for Anyone Searching for God
You may have heard the name Jesus many times.
Perhaps you heard about Him at church, in a movie, from a friend, or while reading the Bible. You may already believe in God but still have questions about who Jesus really is.
Was Jesus only a good teacher? Was He a prophet? Is He really the Son of God? Why did He die on the cross? What does His life have to do with us today?
These are important questions.
You do not need to know everything about Christianity before you begin searching for answers. You do not need to pretend that you have everything figured out either. God is not afraid of honest questions.
This guide will help you understand who Jesus is, why He came, and how you can begin a relationship with Him.

Who Is Jesus?
Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of the world.
He came to earth more than 2,000 years ago. He was born in Bethlehem, grew up in Nazareth, taught people about God, performed miracles, died on a cross, and rose from the dead.
However, Jesus was not just an ordinary man.
The Bible teaches that Jesus existed before He was born on earth. John 1:1 explains that the Word was with God and that the Word was God. John 1:14 then tells us that the Word became flesh and lived among us.
The “Word” in these verses is Jesus.
This means Jesus did not begin to exist when He was born in Bethlehem. He was with God from the beginning.
Jesus came from heaven and entered our world as a human being.
Jesus Is the Son of God
The Bible calls Jesus the Son of God.
This does not mean that God had a son in the same physical way human parents have children. The title describes Jesus’ unique relationship with God the Father.
Jesus shares God’s nature and authority.
When the angel Gabriel told Mary that she would give birth to Jesus, he said that the child would be called the Son of God (Luke 1:35).
At Jesus’ baptism, a voice from heaven declared that Jesus was God’s beloved Son (Matthew 3:17).
Jesus also spoke about God as His Father.
This was one reason some religious leaders became angry with Him. They understood that Jesus was claiming a relationship with God that no ordinary person could claim.
Is Jesus God?
Yes. The Bible teaches that Jesus is God.
Christians believe in one God who is revealed as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is often called the Trinity.
The Trinity can be difficult to understand at first. It does not mean Christians believe in three gods. There is one God, but He is revealed in three persons.
Jesus is God the Son.
He is not God the Father, but He has the same divine nature.
Jesus said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). He also said that anyone who had seen Him had seen the Father (John 14:9).
Jesus showed us what God is like.
When we look at the way Jesus treated people, we see God’s love, mercy, holiness, patience, and truth.

Jesus Became Fully Human
Jesus was fully God, but He also became fully human.
He was born as a baby. He grew up. He became tired, hungry, thirsty, and sad.
Jesus understood pain.
He knew what it felt like to be rejected. He experienced grief when His friend Lazarus died. He faced temptation, criticism, betrayal, loneliness, and suffering.
Because Jesus became human, He understands what we go through.
Hebrews 4:15 explains that Jesus understands our weaknesses because He was tempted, yet He did not sin.
You are not speaking to a distant Savior who cannot understand your life.
Jesus knows what pain feels like. He knows what rejection feels like. He knows what it is like to be misunderstood.
You can come to Him honestly.
Jesus Lived Without Sin
Every human being has sinned.
Romans 3:23 tells us that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s glory.
Sin is more than making a small mistake. Sin is anything we think, say, or do that goes against God’s will.
Sin includes dishonesty, pride, hatred, greed, selfishness, unforgiveness, and rejecting God.
Jesus was different from every other person.
He never sinned.
He obeyed God completely. He always spoke the truth. He treated people with compassion, but He never ignored sin or pretended that wrong behavior did not matter.
Because Jesus was without sin, He was able to take the punishment for our sins.
What Did Jesus Teach?
Jesus taught people about the kingdom of God.
He showed people that God was not only interested in outward religious behavior. God also cared about what was happening inside their hearts.
Jesus taught people to:
- Love God.
- Love their neighbors.
- Forgive others.
- Care for people in need.
- Turn away from sin.
- Pray sincerely.
- Trust God.
- Treat others with mercy.
- Live with humility.
- Seek God’s kingdom first.
Jesus spoke clearly, but He also used stories called parables.
These stories used familiar things such as seeds, sheep, farming, money, and family relationships to explain spiritual truth.
One of His best-known stories is the parable of the lost son in Luke 15. It shows us the heart of a loving father who welcomes his child home.
This story helps us understand how God responds when a sinner turns back to Him.

Jesus Welcomed People Others Rejected
Jesus spent time with people who were often looked down on by society.
He spoke to the poor, the sick, tax collectors, women, foreigners, and people known for sinful lives.
Some religious leaders criticized Jesus for this.
However, Jesus explained that sick people need a doctor. In the same way, sinners need a Savior.
Jesus did not approve of sin, but He offered forgiveness and a new beginning.
He treated people with dignity while calling them to change.
This is still what Jesus does today.
He does not wait for us to clean up our entire lives before coming to Him. We come as we are, but He loves us too much to leave us unchanged.
Why Did Jesus Perform Miracles?
Jesus performed many miracles during His ministry.
He healed sick people. He gave sight to the blind. He helped people who could not walk. He calmed a storm. He fed thousands of people with a small amount of food. He even raised people from the dead.
These miracles showed His compassion.
Jesus did not look at suffering and remain unmoved. He cared about people and responded to their needs.
The miracles also showed His authority.
Jesus had authority over sickness, nature, evil spirits, sin, and death.
His miracles were signs pointing people toward the truth about who He was.
Jesus was not simply a teacher giving helpful advice. He was the promised Savior sent by God.
Why Did Jesus Come to Earth?
Jesus came to save us from sin and bring us back to God.
Sin creates separation between us and God.
God is holy, which means He is completely good, pure, and without sin. We cannot remove our guilt by trying harder or doing enough good deeds.
Good works are important, but they cannot erase sin.
We needed someone to rescue us.
Jesus came to do what we could never do for ourselves.
He lived the perfect life we could not live. He then willingly gave His life for us.
Luke 19:10 says that Jesus came to seek and save those who were lost.
Jesus did not come only for people who already appeared religious or respectable. He came for sinners.
That includes every one of us.

Why Did Jesus Die on the Cross?
Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins.
Death on a cross was painful and shameful. Jesus was falsely accused, mocked, beaten, and crucified.
He had done nothing wrong.
Jesus could have avoided the cross, but He chose to give His life.
He said that no one was taking His life from Him. He was laying it down willingly (John 10:18).
On the cross, Jesus took our guilt upon Himself.
First Peter 2:24 explains that Jesus carried our sins in His body on the cross so that we could turn away from sin and live for what is right.
Jesus became our substitute.
Think of it this way: we were guilty, but Jesus stepped forward and paid the price for us.
The cross shows how serious sin is. It also shows how deeply God loves us.

Did Jesus Really Rise From the Dead?
Yes. The resurrection is at the center of the Christian faith.
After Jesus died, His body was placed in a tomb. A large stone was rolled across the entrance.
On the third day, the tomb was empty.
Jesus had risen from the dead.
He appeared to His followers, spoke with them, ate with them, and allowed them to see that He was truly alive.
At one time, He appeared to more than 500 people (1 Corinthians 15:6).
The disciples did not expect the resurrection. At first, many of them were frightened and confused. Thomas even said he would not believe unless he saw Jesus for himself.
Jesus later appeared to Thomas and showed him the wounds in His hands.
The resurrection proves that Jesus defeated death.
It also confirms that His sacrifice was accepted and that He truly is the Son of God.
Christians do not follow a Savior who remained in a grave.
Jesus is alive.
Why Is the Resurrection Important?
Without the resurrection, Christianity would have no foundation.
The resurrection gives us hope.
Because Jesus rose from the dead:
- Sin can be forgiven.
- Death has been defeated.
- Eternal life is possible.
- Jesus is alive today.
- Believers have hope beyond this life.
- God has the power to give people a new beginning.
First Peter 1:3 describes this as a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Our hope is living because Jesus is living.
Is Jesus the Only Way to God?
Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6).
He did not say He was one possible way among many. He said that no one comes to the Father except through Him.
This may sound narrow to some people, but we need to understand why Jesus said it.
Our greatest problem is sin. We need forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
No other person lived without sin, died in our place, and rose from the dead.
Jesus is the way to God because He is the One who dealt with our sin.
Salvation is not about choosing the religion that suits us best. It is about being rescued by the Savior God provided.

What Does Jesus Offer Us Today?
Jesus offers more than religious rules.
He offers forgiveness, peace with God, eternal life, and a new relationship with Him.
Forgiveness
No sin is too great for Jesus to forgive when we genuinely turn to Him.
You may carry regret from the past. You may feel ashamed of things you have done. You may believe God could never accept you.
The cross tells a different story.
Jesus already knows everything about you, and He still invites you to come to Him.
A New Beginning
Following Jesus does not mean your past never happened.
It means your past no longer has to control your future.
Second Corinthians 5:17 teaches that anyone who belongs to Christ becomes a new creation.
God begins changing us from the inside.
This change may not happen all at once. Christian growth is often a process. We learn, fall, get back up, pray, grow, and keep following Jesus.

Peace With God
Many people try to find peace through money, relationships, achievements, entertainment, or avoiding their problems.
These things may distract us for a while, but they cannot give us peace with God.
Romans 5:1 explains that we can have peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ.
This does not mean every problem suddenly disappears.
It means we are no longer separated from God.
Eternal Life
Eternal life is not simply living forever.
It is knowing God and belonging to Him.
Jesus promised eternal life to those who trust in Him.
Death is not the end for a Christian. We have the hope of being with the Lord forever.
What Does It Mean to Believe in Jesus?
Believing in Jesus means more than agreeing that He existed.
It means trusting Him.
You trust that Jesus is the Son of God. You believe He died for your sins and rose again. You depend on Him for salvation instead of depending on your own goodness.
Imagine sitting on a chair.
You may believe the chair exists. You may believe it looks strong. However, trust happens when you place your weight on it.
In the same way, trusting Jesus means placing your life in His hands.
You stop trying to save yourself and depend on Him.
What Is Repentance?
Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God.
It begins with a change of heart.
You recognize that you have sinned. You agree with God that your sin is wrong. You ask for forgiveness and choose to follow a different direction.
Repentance is not only feeling guilty.
A person may feel sorry because their actions caused trouble, yet still have no desire to change.
True repentance includes a willingness to leave sin behind.
This does not mean you will become perfect overnight. It means you no longer want sin to rule your life.
You are choosing to follow Jesus.

How Can I Begin a Relationship With Jesus?
You begin by coming to Jesus with honesty and faith.
You do not need special religious words. You can speak to Him in your own words.
Tell Him that you know you have sinned. Ask Him to forgive you. Tell Him that you believe He died for you and rose from the dead. Ask Him to become the Lord of your life.
A prayer could sound like this:
A Simple Prayer of Faith
Lord Jesus, I know that I have sinned and need Your forgiveness. I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. Please forgive me, change my heart, and help me follow You. I place my life in Your hands. Thank You for loving me and giving me a new beginning. Amen.
The prayer itself is not a magic formula.
We are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus, not because we said every word perfectly.
God looks at the heart.
What Should I Do After Accepting Jesus?
Beginning a relationship with Jesus is the start of a new life.
You will not understand everything straight away. That is normal.
Here are some simple next steps.
Start Reading the Bible
The Bible helps you learn who God is and how He wants you to live.
A good place to begin is the Gospel of John. It explains who Jesus is and why He came.
Read a small section each day. You do not need to rush.
Ask yourself:
- What does this passage teach me about Jesus?
- Is there something God wants me to understand?
- Is there something I need to change?
- Is there a promise I can trust?
Pray Every Day
Prayer is simply talking to God.
You can thank Him, ask for help, confess sin, pray for others, and speak honestly about how you feel.
You do not need to use impressive words.
God would rather hear an honest prayer than a speech that sounds religious but does not come from the heart.
Find a Bible-Believing Church
Following Jesus was never meant to be done alone.
A healthy church can help you understand the Bible, grow in faith, worship with other Christians, and receive encouragement.
Look for a church that teaches the Bible clearly and places Jesus at the center.

Tell Someone About Your Decision
Speak to a trusted Christian, pastor, friend, or family member.
Tell them that you have chosen to follow Jesus.
They may be able to pray with you and help you take your next steps.
Be Baptized
Baptism is an important step of obedience for a believer.
It is a public way of showing that you belong to Jesus and have begun a new life with Him.
Speak to a local pastor about baptism and what it means.
Will Following Jesus Make Life Easy?
Following Jesus does not mean you will never face problems.
Christians still experience sickness, grief, disappointment, financial pressure, temptation, and difficult relationships.
Jesus never promised that life would always be easy.
He promised that He would be with us.
Faith gives us strength to face life with God rather than facing everything alone.
There may be times when you feel close to God. There may also be days when your faith feels weak.
Your relationship with God is not based only on your feelings.
God remains faithful even when you are tired, confused, or struggling.
What Happens When a Christian Sins?
Christians still make mistakes.
Becoming a Christian does not make a person instantly perfect.
The difference is that a Christian should no longer be comfortable living in sin.
When you sin, do not run away from God.
Confess it. Ask for forgiveness. Learn from it. Get back up and continue following Jesus.
First John 1:9 teaches that God forgives and cleanses us when we confess our sins.
God corrects His children, but He does not throw them away every time they fail.
Jesus is patient, but He also calls us to grow.
Can Jesus Really Change My Life?
Yes, but change does not always happen in the way we expect.
Sometimes God changes a situation quickly. At other times, He changes us slowly as we learn to trust Him.
Jesus can change the direction of your life.
He can help you replace hatred with forgiveness, fear with faith, pride with humility, and hopelessness with hope.
This does not mean you will never struggle again.
It means you no longer struggle alone.
The same Jesus who saved you will continue working in you.
Philippians 1:6 reminds believers that God will continue the good work He began in them.
Frequently Asked Questions About Jesus
Was Jesus a real historical person?
Yes. Jesus lived during the first century in the region of Judea. The New Testament records His life, teachings, death, and resurrection. Historical writings outside the Bible also refer to Jesus and the early Christian movement.
The most important question is not only whether Jesus lived, but whether we believe what He said about Himself.
Was Jesus only a prophet?
Jesus was a prophet, but He was much more than a prophet. Prophets delivered messages from God, while Jesus spoke with His own authority, forgave sins, accepted worship, and said that eternal life is found through Him.
The Bible teaches that Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior of the world.
Did Jesus ever sin?
No. Jesus faced temptation, pain, rejection, and suffering, but He never sinned. His sinless life made Him the perfect sacrifice for our sins.
Can Jesus forgive every sin?
Yes. Jesus can forgive every sin when a person honestly turns to Him, repents, and asks for forgiveness.
You may feel that your past is too shameful, but God’s grace is greater than your sin. Jesus offers forgiveness and a new beginning.
Do I need to become perfect before coming to Jesus?
No. You do not need to fix your whole life before coming to Jesus. You come to Him because you need His forgiveness, help, and saving grace.
Come honestly and allow Jesus to begin changing your heart and guiding your life.
What if I still have doubts?
Having questions does not mean you must stop searching. In Mark 9:24, a man told Jesus that he believed but needed help with his unbelief. You can be just as honest with God.
Ask God to help you understand. Read the Gospel of John, speak with a trusted Christian, and continue searching with an open heart.
